Senior Hunter Gettelfinger Post-Match Interview

BERKELEY – Nine different Golden Bears found the back of the net as the No. 5 Cal men's water polo team defeated Santa Clara, 11-4, Thursday (Nov. 14) in a non-conference match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Bears were led by junior Aleksa Saponjic and freshman Chandler Jarrels-Stickney with two goals apiece, and senior goalie Michael Boggan finished with 10 saves in three periods.

Cal improved to 15-6 overall and will next conclude its 2013 home schedule Sunday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. with an MPSF match versus UC Irvine. The Anteaters-Bears contest will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks Bay Area. Sunday’s match will also be Senior Day, as the Cal program will be honoring its seven seniors – Michael Boggan, Giacomo Cupido, Hunter Gettelfinger, Ayal Keren, Miquel Martin de Bustamante, Scott Siegel and Collin Smith.

On Thursday, the Bears got the only goal of the first period when sophomore Colin Mulcahy scored on a counterattack with 1:25 left in the opening quarter. After the Broncos’ David Guibord tied the match, 1-1, with a skip shot at 6:28 remaining in the second period, Cal took control of the contest by outscoring the next three goals – one by sophomore Thomas Agramonte and two by freshman Jarrels-Stickney.

Leading 4-2 at the halftime, the Bears scored the next four goals – one each by senior Hunter Gettelfinger and freshman Farrel South in the third period, and then Saponjic opened the fourth period with a pair of goals to give Cal an 8-2 advantage.

Three different players scored the next three goals for the Bears. Junior Graham Nesbit tallied a goal on a strong inside move with 2:18 left in the match, Cupido scored a skip shot with 1:42 left on the clock and Siegel scored his first collegiate goal on a nice shot off of a Smith assist with 56 seconds left in the match.
