WALNUT CREEK – For their efforts in leading Cal to its best start in 20 years and a 13-game undefeated streak, a trio of Golden Bears has earned All-Conference status, the Pac-12 announced Tuesday.

Senior captain Emi Lawson (Seattle) is an All-Pac-12 First Team selection, while sophomore Ifeoma Onumonu (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was named to the second team and senior captain Rachel Mercik (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) is an honorable mention.

Washington State claimed a pair of the top honors, as midfielder Micaela Castain is the Pac-12 Player of the Year and Keidane McAlpine is the Coach of the Year. UCLA's Darian Jenkins is the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year.

This is Lawson’s first selection to the first team in her four years as a Cal starter. As a central defender, she has been a staple on the Cal back line, playing 84 games for the Bears and starting nearly every single game. This season, Lawson has been a critical leader for the Cal defense and scored a goal in the final four seconds of regulation against Colorado to force an eventual tie with the Buffs. Lawson was previously an All-Pac-12 Second Team selection in 2012.

Onumonu, last year’s Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, leads the squad in points (19) and goals (8). She scored the gamewinners against San Jose State and Arizona. This is her second consecutive All-Conference selection after being named to the All-Pac-12 First Team last season.

Mercik earns her honorable mention and first-ever All-Pac-12 recognition following a standout season in which she scored a career-high six goals and recorded two assists. Her one game-winning goal came as a golden goal header against Stanford in overtime to lift the Bears to their first victory over the Cardinal in seven years.

Cal finished the regular season with an 11-4-5 overall record and 4-4-3 conference record, good for fifth in the Pac-12. The Blue and Gold were ranked as high as No. 8 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll and started the season on a 13-game unbeaten streak, which was the team’s best start in 20 years.

The Bears head to Santa Clara Saturday as they begin their tenth consecutive postseason bid by facing the Broncos in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Buck Shaw Stadium.
