BERKELEY – Cal opposite hitter Christina Higgins has been named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Higgins, a junior from Inglewood, Calif., was a primary reason the Bears became the first opponent this season to sweep a weekend road trip to Utah and Colorado. She set a career-high with 20 kills during a four-set win over the Buffs and added 15 kills during a sweep of the Utes.
Overall for the two matches, Higgins averaged 5.0 kills per set and registered an impressive .352 hitting percentage.
Higgins is the first Cal player to be named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week since Tarah Murrey captured the honor after the final week of the 2011 season. It’s the second weekly recognition for the Bears this season. Libero Maddy Kerr was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Oct. 28.
Higgins was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week twice in 2011.
Cal, which moved up to No. 20 in this week’s AVCA Top 25, plays at Oregon State on Thursday night at 7 p.m. and at Oregon on Friday at 6 p.m. Friday’s match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
