BERKELEY – California soccer fans have a chance to train with one of the premiere college women’s soccer programs in the country this December as part of Cal’s Winter Camp Series, Dec. 14 and 15.
The team will host two camps as part of its Winter Camp Series – a Goalkeeper/Striker Camp on Saturday, Dec. 14 and a Winter College ID Camp on Sunday, Dec. 15. Each camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Witter Rugby Field. Registration for each session is $125.
Participants have a chance to receive specialized instruction from current Cal players and coaches, including assistant coach Cori Alexander, a standout goalkeeper for the University of Portland who led her team to a national championship in 2005, and head coach Neil McGuire, who has coached a number of national team players and Olympians including Alex Morgan, Betsy Hassett and Katrin Omarsdottir.
More information on each camp, including age requirements, is listed below:
Winter Goalkeeper/Striker Camp Date: Saturday, December 14, 2013 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Bring a sack lunch) Cost: $125 Ages: 8-13 (8th grade and younger) Location: Witter Field (Turf Field at UC Berkeley, will play rain or shine)
Strikers will work on various aspects of how to finish in front of the goal, and how to finish under game-like pressure. Specifically, we will work on attacking moves to create shooting lanes, posting up and turning on defenders, as well as the technical aspects of driving, chipping, and bending the ball, which are the skills the best finishers in the world focus on. For Goalkeepers, we will work on proper footwork across the goal, handling all types of shots, proper diving techniques, and how to deal with crosses, 1v1's, and through balls. Come develop your skills and take your game to the next level with the Cal staff!
Winter College ID Camp (*CIF legal, high school athletes can participate) Date: Sunday, December 15, 2013 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (Bring a sack lunch) Cost: $125 Ages: 14-18 (Freshmen and older) Location: Witter Field (Turf Field at UC Berkeley, will play rain or shine)
This is a specialized one-day camp, providing the perfect opportunity for you to work directly with Head Coach Neil McGuire and his coaching staff. Come ready to showcase your skills, learn a great deal, have fun and see how one of the top women’s soccer programs in the nation trains.
The camp structure will be technically based in the morning, with a break for lunch, and an afternoon filled with small-sided games for competition. Many of the drills you will experience are what the current Cal women’s soccer team does on a weekly basis. This camp is open to all positions (goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders, and forwards). There will be specialized goalkeeper training in the morning with current Cal goalkeeping coach, Cori Alexander.
