Fans Invited to Women's Gymnastics Skills Exhibition
BERKELEY – California women’s gymnastics fans can preview routines for the upcoming season as part of the team’s full routine verification session, open free to the public on Monday, Nov. 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Golden Bear Rec Center.
Fans will be able to watch routines from each of the gymnasts on all four events as the team simulates real-time meet situations.
"Our girls have been busting their tails since we started official practice in mid-September. They're getting stronger each week and full routines are confidently starting to come together,” said Cal head coach Justin Howell. "Fans can expect to see some great, unique and elegant gymnastics, and a team chemistry that is really starting to jell."
The intrasquad will help the team gauge its progress and readiness to compete before the season begins in January.
"This will be our first opportunity to realistically see where we are at this point and how the team responds under some real pressure,” Howell said. “It's one thing to hit your set when no one is watching you, and it's a whole different ball game when you raise your arm to salute and compete one at a time and all eyes are focused your way. From now until January, that will be our focus: learning to hit when it counts."
This season, Cal returns 2013 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Serena Leong and All-Pac-12 Second Team selection senior Alicia Asturias, as well as seven newcomers, including senior international elite gymnast Jessica Howe and 2011 JO National Team member Isabelle Castillo, plus Dana Ho, Charlie Owens, Zoe Draghi, Amber Takara and Desiree Palomares.
The women’s gymnastics team opens its season on Sunday, Jan. 5 in Sacramento for the five-team NorCal Meet, which also features Stanford, UC Davis, Sacramento State and San Jose State. The home opener against perennial Pac-12 powerhouse Utah is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in Haas Pavilion.
Tickets for all regular-season home meets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth (12th grade and under) and seniors (age 65 and above), and can be purchased at the ticket office on Spieker Plaza on the day of the meet.
