BERKELEY – California winds up the fall portion of its season when Zsofi Susanyi competes in the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and the rest of the Golden Bears play in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational this week.
Susanyi, a junior, will play in the indoor tournament that is slated to run from Thursday through Sunday, Nov. 7-10, at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center, in Flushing, N.Y. Ranked No. 4 in the ITA preseason singles poll, Susanyi will take on Georgia’s 14th-ranked Maho Kowase at 11:30 a.m. PT in the opening singles round of 32.
Last year, Susanyi also earned an at-large singles berth to the indoor tournament and reached the semifinals.
As the only tournament on the ITA calendar to showcase elite players from every level of college tennis, the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serves as the culmination of the fall season. Hosted by Columbia University, this prestigious event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.
Susanyi's eight teammates – including fifth-ranked senior Anett Schutting, 23rd-ranked sophomore Klara Fabikova and 44th-ranked sophomore Lynn Chi – will play in Tempe, Ariz., from Friday through Sunday in the ASU Thunderbird Invitational. The field for the Sun Devils’ tournament – played at the Whiteman Tennis Center – includes Cal, Arizona State, BYU, Fresno State, Kansas State and Michigan. Seventh-year Cal head coach Amanda Augustus was the head coach of the Wolverines for one season before returning to lead her alma mater’s program.
The schedule for the Thunderbird Invitational includes doubles matches beginning at 7:30 a.m. PT and singles starting at 8:30 a.m. PT each day of the three-day event. The draws for the ASU tournament will come out on Thursday.
