No. 5 Cal Falls at No. 2 UCLA, 6-4

LOS ANGELES – Despite the Golden Bears tying the contest in the fourth quarter, the No. 5 Cal water polo team saw a four-match winning streak end with a 6-4 loss at No. 2 UCLA Friday (Nov. 1) in an MPSF match at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center. With the loss, the Bears drop to improved to 13-5 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Bruins improved to 22-2 overall and 3-1 in conference.

Cal never owned the lead in the match, giving up a goal at the end of the first period and then being outscored 3-2 in the second period. Senior All-American Collin Smith and junior Olympian Aleksa Saponjic provided the Bears with their second quarter scores, and junior Blake Kelly got Cal with a goal at 4-3 with a shot at 1:23 left in the third period.

Redshirt freshman Farrel South was able to tie the contest, 4-4, with a goal at 7:26 in the final period, but the Bruins outscored the Bears, 2-1, in the final period for the final, 6-4, margin. Cal junior goalie Jon Sibley finished with seven saves on the day.

The Bears had won five of their last six matches before they traveled to UCLA for the Pac-12 Networks televised match. Cal will next face Long Beach State on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 12 p.m. in Long Beach. Earlier this season, the Bears topped the 49ers, 15-10, in the second match of the NorCal Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Long Beach State is coached by former Cal All-American and Olympian Gavin Arroyo.
