CHICAGO, Ill. – Cal junior linebacker Khairi Fortt was one of 12 collegiate semifinalists named Monday for the prestigious Butkus Award® honoring the nation’s top linebackers at the high school, collegiate and professional levels.

Fortt has started each of Cal’s first eight games and leads the team with 54 tackles, while adding 3.0 tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry. Fortt had career highs of 13 tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss (-2 yards) and the quarterback hurry against Ohio State. The 13 tackles are the most by a Cal player in 2013, while the 2.0 tackles for loss equal the most.

The finalists at the collegiate level will be announced November 26 and the winners named December 10. The professional winner will be announced in early 2014.

The Butkus Award honors outstanding linebackers at three levels of play, while spreading the word about the I Play Clean™ initiative, which encourages teens to eat well, train hard, and play smart, instead of resorting to performance-enhancing drugs. More information is available at or

“This award is about honoring linebackers at all levels, and reminding them that they have a responsibility to serve as role models and give back to society,” said Butkus, a legendary Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker.
