SAN FRANCISCO - California succeeded Saturday at winning its pool at the Saint Mary's Sevens Invitational on Ray Sheeran Field, going 3-0 to set up a cup quarterfinal against Arizona State at 10:40 a.m. Sunday on Treasure Island.

The Bears (6-1) beat Sacramento State, San Diego State and Chico State Saturday by the combined score of 102-22 for a tourney-best +80 points differential after day one. Cal will face the Sun Devils looking to advance to the 1 p.m. cup semifinal against the Saint Mary's/Cal Poly winner of their quarterfinal.

The cup final kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the home of San Francisco Golden Gate Rugby Club.

Cal began its second straight event Saturday against the Hornets, winning 35-7 in a match that began with two tries by sophomore Harry Adolphus and finished with the first college career points by freshman Jamie Howells on a conversion kick.

Next up were the Aztecs, who held the Bears at bay near the SDSU goal line for several phases before Brad Harrington opened the scoring with his try. Sophomore Russell Webb hit three conversions, the last after setting up Jake Anderson's try with a cheeky dribble kickoff that Webb recovered, and added a try in Cal's 31-5 victory.

The Bears finished the day with a six-try effort against Chico State as four underclassman - sophomores Cameron Todd, Anthony Salaber and Adolphus, and freshman John Warnock - got into the try-scoring column.

Head coach Jack Clark gave playing time across the class years on his roster, with underclassman making the majority of the appearances on the day for the Bears. “Again, I am pleased we get to spread some playing time around the squad,” Clark said. “I thought we were mostly good throughout the three matches. Certainly plenty of room for improvement, but mostly good."

"It's great the young guys got those minutes today," said Todd, a second-year center from Live Oak. "We played to our systems and moved the ball, although we did get a little sloppy at times. If we clean that up we can do well tomorrow."
