MORAGA, Calif. – California has a chance to win both the singles and doubles titles on Tuesday at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Saint Mary’s, as Campbell Johnson and the team of Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton vie for the regional crowns at the Korth Tennis Complex.
The Bears are vying to win automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships by winning regional titles. The indoor tournament is slated for Nov. 7-10 in New York City.
Johnson won twice – including a quarterfinal victory over teammate Filip Bergevi – on Monday to claim a spot in the singles final. The Golden Bear senior, who is seeded No. 2 in Moraga and ranked 41st nationally in singles, defeated the 17th-seeded Bergevi, a freshman, 6-4, 6-4, and then bested Washington’s ninth-seeded Max Manthou, 6-4, 6-0, in the semis. In Tuesday’s 1 p.m. final, Johnson will play Pacific’s ninth-seeded Sem Verbeek.
Verbeek defeated Cal freshman Andre Goransson – who was also seeded ninth – in the semis, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Goransson had earlier beaten Stanford’s Anthony Tsodikov, 6-3, 6-4, in Monday’s quarterfinals.
The ninth-seeded duo of juniors Bayane and Melton topped the UC Davis team of Brett Bacharach and James Wade, 8-3, in the doubles quarterfinals, and then the Bears beat the seventh-seeded Stanford team of John Morrissey and Yale Goldberg, 8-2, in the semis. The Bears will play a doubles team TBA in the 1:45 p.m. final on Tuesday.
Johnson teamed with Bergevi in doubles, but the sixth-seeded Bears lost to another UC Davis tandem – Adam Levie and Alec Adamson – 8-3, in their quarterfinal. Levie/Adamson will play San Francisco’s top-seeded Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa in a semi at 11 a.m. on Tuesday for the right to face Bayane and Melton in the doubles final.
