SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. – Led by three goals apiece from sophomore Mitchell Hamilton and junior Aleksa Saponjic, the No. 5 Cal water polo team defeated No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 12-9, Sunday (Oct. 20) in an MPSF league tilt in Santa Barbara. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
It was the second victory in a row for Cal over the Gauchos. The Bears had defeated UCSB, 11-3, last weekend in the fifth-place match of the SoCal Invitational in Irvine. Besides the three goals from Hamilton and Saponjic, senior Hunter Gettelfinger added two goals. Blake Kelly, Farrel South, Collin Smith and Giacomo Cupido also scored for Cal, while junior goalie Jon Sibley finished with five saves.
“UC Santa Barbara is a tough place to play,” said Cal coach Kirk Everist. “It was a solid team effort for us. Mitchell Hamilton stepped up on the offensive end with a hat trick, which was great to see. We need to improve, but we are definitely happy with the win.”
Everist’s squad next hosts Pepperdine in a MPSF night league match on Friday, Oct 25 at 7 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
