MORAGA, Calif. – The second day of the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships featured three Golden Bears advancing to the singles round of 16 and two California teams moving into the doubles round of 16 on Saturday at Saint Mary’s and the Moraga Country Club.
In the singles main draw round of 32, second-seeded senior Campbell Johnson defeated Gonzaga’s 17th-seeded Vladimir Mijatovic, 6-3, 6-3, ninth-seeded freshman Andre Goransson beat Oregon’s 17th-seeded Daniel Sardu, 6-2, 6-1, and co-17th seeded freshman Filip Bergevi topped Stanford’s Daniel Ho, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3.
Four Bears also lost in the round of 32. They included junior Nikhil Jayashankar, who fell to Pacific’s ninth-seeded Sem Verbeek, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1; ninth-seeded junior Gregory Bayane, who lost to Fresno State’s 17th-seeded Sam MacNeil, 6-3, 6-2; sophomore Wyatt Houghton, who dropped a 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-6(3) match to Stanford’s fifth-seeded Nolan Paige; and 17th-seeded sophomore Mads Engsted, a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 loser to Santa Clara’s third-seeded John Lamble.
Cal’s two highest seeded teams – which earned byes in the opening round – were able to climb out of the main draw doubles round of 32 and into Sunday’s round of 16. They included the sixth-seeded pair of Johnson and Bergevi, which beat Pacific’s Daniel Alameh and Denis Stolyarov, 8-2, and the ninth-seeded duo of junior Chase Melton and Bayane, which topped San Francisco’s Timothy Tan and Yezan Dayeh, 8-4.
Two more Cal doubles teams won in the main draw’s round of 64, with Goransson/Engsted besting USF’s James Tallman/Johan Samuelsson, 8-3, and Jayashankar/Houghton edging Fresno State’s Ethan Lopez/Nikolas Papic, 8-7(3). But both Bears’ pairs lost in the next round, as Fresno State’s ninth-seeded John Darmstaedter/Sam McNeil edged Goransson/Engsted, 8-7(8), and Sacramento State’s ninth-seeded Marek Marksoo/Tom Miller beat Jayashankar/Houghton, 8-2.
The regional will open with doubles matches followed by singles on Sunday.
