Cal Defeats UCSB, 11-3, to Place Fifth at SoCal

IRVINE, CALIF. – No. 5 Cal water polo, behind three goals from junior Olympian Aleksa Saponjic, powered past No. 6-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 11-3, to place fifth at the SoCal Invitational Sunday (Oct. 13) in Irvine. The Golden Bears (11-4) finished the tournament 3-1 – defeating UC San Diego, 13-7, and falling to Stanford, 14-8, on Saturday – before recovering to top host UC Irvine, 11-9 and UCSB, 11-3, on Sunday.

Saponjic helped lead his native Serbia to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Cal was also bolstered by two goals apiece from sophomore Mitchell Hamilton and freshman Farrel South against the Gauchos. Junior goalie Jon Sibley finished with an impressive 11 saves and Colin Mulcahy, Giacomo Cupido, Matt Russell and Luka Ivanovic also notched goals for the Bears.

Cal had owned a 5-2 advantage at the half, and then kept the pressure by outscoring UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, in the final 16 minutes.

“It was a very good effort in the final game of the tournament,” said Cal coach Kirk Everist. “Our defense played well and our offense was steady,”

In the early match Sunday (8 a.m.), the Bears came back from a 6-5 halftime deficit by outscoring host UC Irvine, 6-3, in the second half on the way to an 11-9 victory over the Anteaters.

In the match against UC Irvine, Cal was paced by four goals from redshirt freshman South, three goals from sophomore Mulcahy and two goals by senior Hunter Gettelfinger. Boggan collected five saves, while junior Blake Kelly and sophomore Thomas Agramonte also notched goals for the Bears.

Gettelfinger scored his two goals in the third period when Cal shutout the Anteaters, 3-0. South had two of his four goals in the fourth period.

Kirk Everist’s squad next battles UC Santa Barbara in a MPSF league match, Sunday, Oct 20 at 12 p.m. in Santa Barbara.
