DAVIS, Calif. – California joined Stanford and Missouri State as teams to fall to UC Davis at Aggie Stadium this season after the Aggies remained undefeated at home with a 2-0 win over the Golden Bears Sunday.
Exactly one week after knocking off then-No. 6 Stanford by a score of 3-2, the Aggies defeated Cal with goals early in each half Sunday afternoon.
The first half was an even affair in Davis with the teams both attempting three shots and collecting one save, while Cal was awarded the only penalty corner of the period. Unfortunately, the Aggies got on the board in the ninth minute with a goal from Kayla Wigney that she rolled inside the near post past Golden Bear goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson.
UC Davis added the second score in the 42nd minute when Agustina Singh scored unassisted at 41:43. California continued to press and was awarded two more penalty corners in the half, but with only three shots attempted in the final 35 minutes, the team could not find an equalizer despite bringing in an extra attacker for Hendrickson over the final five minutes.
“We adjusted as best as we could,” California head coach Shellie Onstead said of playing the game at Aggie Stadium, home of UC Davis field hockey and football. “Actually, this is one of the best games we’ve played this surface. We don’t train on it full time and Davis was able to take advantage of it.”
California and UC Davis will play the backend of the home and home schedule next Sunday, Oct. 20. The game will act as Senior Day for the Golden Bear trio of Jordan O’Reilly, Shannon Elmitt and Allie Swartz.
