SAN FRANCISCO/SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – California’s Campbell Johnson and Andre Goransson each won twice on Saturday to advance to the singles semifinals at the Battle in the Bay Classic at the California Tennis Club in San Francisco, while another contingent of Golden Bears took part of the second day at the UCSB Classic further south in the Golden State.

Johnson, a senior seeded No. 1 in the tournament and ranked 41st by the ITA, defeated Stanford’s Daniel Ho in the round of 16, 06, 6-2, 6-4, and then beat Pepperdine’s David Sofaer, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals. The Bear will take on Boise State’s eighth-seeded and 123rd-ranked Thomas Tenreiro in one semifinal at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Also in the round of 16, Cal freshman Filip Bergevi fell to Santa Clara’s Ilya Osintsev, 6-1 6-0. Tenreiro beat Osintsev to earn his spot opposite Johnson in the semi.

In the other part of the bracket, Goransson, a freshman, topped Stanford’s Anthony Tsodikov, 6-3, 6-1, in the round of 16 and then bested USC’s Nick Crystal, 6-3, 7-5. Goransson will face San Diego State’s seventh-seeded and 114th-ranked Thorsten Bertsch in the other singles semi at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

At the UCSB Classic in Santa Barbara, Bears advanced to the finals of both the top-flight singles and doubles brackets. Junior Nikhil Jayashankar will vie for the Flight A singles crown after beating UCLA’s Ryoto Tachi, 6-4, 1-6, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and James Wade of UC Davis, 7-6, 6-3, in the semifinals. He plays Alec Adamson of UC Davis in the Sunday final.

Cal sophomore Wyatt Houghton won his Flight A quarterfinal against UCSB’s Ziad Sultan, 6-2, 6-3, but fell to Adamson, 7-6, 6-2, in the semis. Houghton will play in the third-place game against Wade on Sunday.

In Flight A doubles, Houghton and junior Chase Melton will play in Sunday’s final, after defeating UC San Diego’s Horea Porutiu and Kona Luu, 8-1, semifinals. The Bears will play Adamson/Adam Levie of UC Davis in the title match. The Aggies got past Cal’s team of Jayashankar/junior Jack Sanford in their semi.

After losing in the Flight B singles quarterfinals, Sanford – falling to UCSB’s Sasha Gryaznov, 6-3, 7-6 – and sophomore Jordan Smith – dropping a 7-5, 6-2, match to Brett Bacharach of UC Davis – moved to the fifth-place bracket. Smith fell to UCSB’s Corey Karan, 6-4, 7-6, while Sanford dropped out of his match with Luu due to injury. With Sanford out, Sanford will play Mitch Thorp of UC Davis in the seventh-place match.

The tournaments in San Francisco and Santa Barbara wind to a close on Sunday.
