Bears Open Play at Battle in the Bay, UCSB Classic

SAN FRANCISCO/SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – California collected six wins in northern California and six in the southern part of the state, as the Golden Bears took part in the Battle in the Bay Classic as well as the UCSB Classic on Friday.

At the California Tennis Club in San Francisco, top-seeded Campbell Johnson had a first-round bye in singles. In the subsequent round of 32, the Cal senior defeated Boise State’s Toby Mitchell, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, to set up a Saturday round of 16 match with Stanford’s Daniel Ho slated for 11 a.m. In the round of 64, Cal freshman Filip Bergevi beat Cal Poly’s Naveen Beasley, 6-3, 6-3, and then upended fourth-seeded Nolan Paige, 6-0, 6-2, in the round of 32. Bergevi next plays Santa Clara’s Ilya Osintsev at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

In the other half of the singles bracket, junior Gregory Bayane beat Boise State’s Brendan McClain, 6-2, 6-3, in the round of 64 and then topped San Francisco’s Rich Van Hout, 6-1, 6-4, in the round of 32. He next battles Santa Clara’s third-seeded John Lamble at noon on Saturday. Freshman Andre Goransson had a first-round bye, and in the round of 32 he defeated UCLA’s Joseph Di Giulio, 6-3, 6-3. The round of 16 pits the young Bear against Stanford’s Anthony Tsodikov at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Both Cal doubles teams lost in the opening round of 16. The third-seeded duo of Bergevi and Johnson fell to Pacific’s Miguel Diaz and Sam Verbeek, 8-6, while Bayane/Goransson lost a tight match to Pepperdine’s Stefan Menichella/David Sofaer, 8-7(3).

In Santa Barbara, Cal posted four singles wins and two doubles victories at the UCSB Classic. In Flight A Singles at the Rec Cen Courts, sophomore Wyatt Houghton topped Kyle Miller of UC Davis, 6-0, 6-4, and junior Nikhil Jayashankar beat the Gauchos’ Tobias Galskov, 7-5, 6-2, in the opening round of 16. On Saturday, Houghton next plays UCSB’s Siad Sultan, while Jayashankar takes on UCLA’s Ryoto Tachi.

Houghton paired with junior teammate Chase Melton in Flight A Doubles to knock off Brett Bacharach and James Wade of UC Davis, 8-5, in the quarterfinals to set up a Saturday match against UC San Diego’s Horea Porutiu and Kona Luu. Also in Flight A, Jayashankar and junior Jack Sanford beat UCSB’s Sultan/Galskov, 8-4, and will play Adam Levie/Alec Adamson of UC Davis on Saturday.

Flight B Singles on Friday included Sanford besting Adam Luba of UC Davis, 6-4, 6-2, and Cal sophomore Jordan Smith beating UCSB’s Eric Johnsson, 6-3, 6-4, in the round of 16 at Rob Gym. Sanford next plays the Gauchos’ Sasha Gryaznov and Smith takes on Bacharach in Saturday quarterfinals.

Smith also played in the Flight C Doubles round robin at the Stadium Road Complex, pairing with Mitch Thorp of UC Davis. The UC products fell to the Northern Arizona tandem of Alexandre Locci/Jordan Gobatie, 8-4, on Friday; they next face UCSB’s Johnsson/Filip Karlsson on Sunday.
