FRESNO – The Cal women’s swimming team opened of the Bulldog Invitational Friday with all 10 swimmers who made the trip getting into the action. The first of two days of competition featured five events, and seven more are scheduled for Saturday.
The afternoon started with the 200-yard medley relay, and the quartet of Mikkel-Ane Stipe, Melissa Bates, Farida Osman and Camille Cheng touched in second place behind Boise State A in 1:45.97. Eva Greene, Taylor Young, Sophia Batchelor and Abi Speers, swimming as Cal B, were sixth in 1:48.82.
All five Bears in the 500-yard freestyle swam exhibition races, and they were led by Cheng’s 5:04.31. In the 200-yard individual medley, Bates placed fourth in 2:08.07, while Young was fifth in 2:09.25.
Freshman Farida Osman was Cal’s top finisher in the 50 free, finishing fourth in 23.75, followed by Cheng in eighth (24.26) and Speers in 12th (24.89). The Bears’ A 800 free relay took in fourth 7:41.11.
With such a small group at the meet, several of the Bears had quite a workout with Stipe, Cheng and Bates all swimming in four of the five events. In addition to Cal, the other teams at the invitational are Fresno State, Boise State and San Jose State.
Cal returns home next weekend to host Florida in a two-day meet at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bears and Gators will face off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 and again at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20.
