PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – California’s run in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships came to a close when the Golden Bears’ 11th-ranked tandem of Anett Schutting and Lynn Chi lost to Utah’s 18th-ranked Paige Miles and Tereza Bekerova in a tight Friday match, 8-7(4), in the doubles back draw quarterfinals.
Earlier in the day, the Cal duo edged Clemson’s 13th-ranked pair of Beatrice Gumulya and Yana Koroleva, 8-6, in the round of 16 at the Riviera Country Club.
In main draw singles, Cal’s third-ranked Zsofi Susanyi and fourth-ranked Schutting both lost in the round of 16 on Friday. Susanyi, a junior also ranked fourth in the nation, played North Carolina qualifier Jamie Loeb and fell, 7-5, 6-1. A senior ranked fifth, Schutting lost to Michigan’s 25th-ranked Emina Bektas, 6-2, 6-0.
“It’s a little disappointing we didn’t advance to the weekend’s matches,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said, “but it was a good check in to see where we’re at. I was particularly impressed with our sophomores, Lynn and Klara (Fabikova), playing for the first time at this event. They had some good wins. It was good for them to see all the players on the national scene and see where they were at. All four of them come back to Berkeley with some things to work on in their games. It’s early in the season, and that’s a good thing. We’ve got a couple weeks to get tuned up for the regional tournament.”
The Bears return to action when they play in the Saint Mary’s Fall Invitational from Friday, Oct. 11, to Sunday, Oct. 13, in Moraga, Calif.
