SACRAMENTO – Racing on the course that will serve as the host of the NCAA West Regionals later this fall, junior Kelsey Santisteban captured her second individual crown of the season to lead Cal at the Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree Friday morning at Haggin Oaks Golf Course. The Golden Bear men and women each placed fifth as a team in the event.
Santisteban, who also won the individual title at the season-opening USF Invitational, finished the 5,000-meter course in 16:23 to win by 13 seconds over second-place Sara Sumpter of UC Davis. Sophomore Mariel Mendoza finished 25th overall with a time of 17:29, while junior Sydney Gray (17:38) and sophomore Xochitl Navarrete (17:40) were right behind in 34th and 37th, respectively. Junior Laura O’Neill and freshman Molly Babcock each finished in 17:52. Freshman Marissa Scott (18:15) and sophomore Julia Lipson (18:20) finished 76th and 81st, respectively. Freshmen Olivia Pear (93rd, 18:27) and Megan Bordes (110th, 18:51) rounded out Cal’s contingent at the race.
Senior J.P. Slater paced the men with a top-10 finish in the 8,000-meter race with a time of 23:53 to place 10th overall. Sophomore Leland Later was right behind in 12th place with a time of 23:55. Junior Jordan Locklear (24:31) was 26th, while freshman Seamus Land (24:48) placed 39th overall. Sophomore Ned Trim (25:01) finished 49th, while sophomore Thomas Joyce (25:26) and freshman Kristian Martinez (25:41) placed 71st and 85th, respectively. Freshman Andrew Bland (25:46) and Juan David Garcia (27:00) placed 92nd and 123rd, respectively, to round out the Golden Bears in the race.
A select group of Bears will head to Terre Haute, Ind., site of this season’s NCAA Championship, for the Pre-Nationals race on Saturday, Oct. 19. An additional group of Bears will head to Santa Clara, Calif. to compete in the Bronco Invitational the same morning.
