PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – California’s third-seeded Zsofi Susanyi and fourth-seeded Anett Schutting both won to advance out of the main draw singles round of 32 on Thursday in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club. The Bears were not as fortunate in doubles, as the pair of Schutting and sophomore Lynn Chi lost in main draw doubles.
A junior who is also ranked fourth in the nation in singles, Susanyi posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Florida’s 16th-ranked Sofie Oyen in the round of 32. She moves on to play North Carolina qualifier Jamie Loeb in the round of 16 at 10:45 a.m. on Friday.
Schutting, a senior who is also ranked fifth in singles, beat Pepperdine qualifier and 29th-ranked Lorraine Guillermo, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4, on Thursday. She will play Michigan’s 25th-ranked Emina Bektas in the round of 16 also on Friday at 10:45 a.m.
In doubles, the 11th-ranked team of Chi and Schutting lost to 19th-ranked USC qualifiers Brynn Boren and Zoe Katz, 8-6, in Thursday’s main draw round of 32. The Bears moved into the doubles back draw and will face the 13th-ranked Clemson duo of Beatrice Gumulya and Yana Koroleva at 9 a.m. on Friday.
