PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – California sophomore Klara Fabikova moved into the singles round of 16 on Tuesday in the qualifying round at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships and stands just one win away from joining teammates Zsofi Susanyi and Anett Schutting in the main draw that starts on Thursday. Fabikova, who won twice on the first day of the qualifying round, plays Texas A&M’s 48th-ranked Cristina Stancu at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday in the tournament at the Riviera Country Club.
The top eight players in the qualifying round – which ends on Wednesday – reach the main draw. On Tuesday, the tournament released the seeds for the main draw, with Susanyi seeded third and Schutting seeded fourth. Schutting, a senior ranked fifth in the ITA preseason poll, will play against a qualifier to be announced at 11:45 a.m. and Susanyi, a junior ranked fourth, will take on a qualifier TBA at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Back in the qualifying bracket, Fabikova, the 23rd-ranked player in the nation and the fourth seed at the All-American, defeated Oklahoma’s 47th-ranked Hermon Brhane, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Fabikova next beat Mississippi’s 85th-ranked Mai El Kamash in the round of 32, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.
Chi, the 44th-ranked player in the nation, fell to Arizona’s 40th-ranked Lacey Smyth, 6-4, 7-5, in the qualifying round of 64 and then moved into the consolation bracket. Facing Clemson’s Romy Koelzer in the consolation round of 32, Chi won, 6-2, 6-4. She will next play Pepperdine’s 68th-ranked Alejandra Granillo at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Wednesday will also include main draw doubles, with Cal’s 11th-ranked pair of Chi and Schutting playing a qualifying team TBA at 10 a.m.
In the qualifying doubles bracket, the 25th-ranked team of Susanyi and Fabikova, seeded seventh, fell to Duke’s 31st-ranked Ester Goldfeld/Annie Mulholland, 8-6, in the round of 32. The Bears next play the Virginia pair of Julia Elbaba and Rachel Pierson at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the qualifying doubles backdraw.
