BERKELEY – A pair of Golden Bears will win the Blue Doubles final at the Cal Nike Invitational on Sunday, as the top-seeded duo of Lynn Chi and Anett Schutting and the second-seeded team of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyi both advanced to the title match out of Saturday’s semifinals at the Hellman Tennis Complex
Chi and Schutting, the 11th-ranked doubles team in the nation, got past UC Santa Barbara’s April Scatliffe/Kiersten Meehan, 8-5, in the semifinals and USC’s Zoe Katz/Ellie Yates, 8-4, in the quarterfinals. Fabikova/Susanyi edged Santa Clara’s Katie Le/Danielle Silva, 8-3, in the semifinals after topping San Jose State’s Gaelle Rey/Marie Klocker, 8-3, in the quarters at Hellman.
Another Cal pair reached the Gold Doubles final, with senior Alice Duranteau and junior Cecilia Estlander moving past Jade Frampton and Liz Searl from Saint Mary’s, 8-1, in the quarters and the UC Davis team of Megan Heneghan and Melissa Kobayakawa, 8-4, in the semis. The Bears will play Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa of Armstrong Atlantic State in Sunday’s final.
Also in Gold Doubles, Cal senior Kelly Chui paired with USF’s Milica Hadzi-Tanovic in the consolation bracket’s quarterfinals, beating Nevada’s Juliette Legendre/Sheila Morales Hidalgo, 8-4. In the semifinals, the Bay Area duo lost to BYU’s Nicolette Tran/Toby Miclat, 8-4.
Three Bears advanced to Sunday’s Blue Singles semifinals. Susanyi, a junior ranked fourth in the ITA preseason poll and seeded No. 1 in the tournament, edged Saint Mary’s 22nd-ranked and fifth-seeded Jenny Jullien, 7-6(5), 7-5, on court one in her quarterfinal to move on to play Chi on Sunday. Chi, a sophomore seeded seventh and ranked 44th, upset USC’s third-seeded and 19th-ranked Brynn Boren, 6-1, 6-4, to advance. Schutting, a senior ranked fifth in singles and seeded second, beat San Francisco’s 57th-ranked Andrea Ka, 6-1, 6-1, and will play Santa Clara’s 20th-ranked Katie Le. The Bronco eliminated Cal’s sixth-seeded and 23rd-ranked Fabikova, 6-4, 7-5.
In the Gold Singles flight, two Bears moved out of Saturday’s quarterfinals to reach Sunday’s semis. Duranteau upended top-seeded Sophie Lohscheidt of Sacramento State, 6-0, 6-3. She will play Armstrong Atlantic State’s Marlen Hacke in the semis. Estlander, completing the last Cal match on Saturday, dropped the first set to USF’s Marina Nikolic but rebounded to win, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. She is scheduled to play Armstrong Atlantic State’s Barbara Krtickova in her semi.
All six doubles finals begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday at Hellman. Most remaining matches, including the Blue, Gold and White singles finals, are also slated for Hellman later in the day.
Additionally on Sunday, the Bears will host an alumnae event to honor former Cal women’s tennis players, providing the alums with a tour of California Memorial Stadium and a lunch on Stow Plaza at Hellman.
