BERKELEY – The California women’s basketball team had the experience of a lifetime last month as the first women’s basketball team to take part in the Pac-12 Globalization Initiative spearheaded by Commissioner Larry Scott.
The Bears enjoyed a 10-day trip to China as ambassadors for the University of California as well as the Pac-12 Conference, visiting Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong for a combination of sightseeing and cultural experiences that not only bonded a team coming off of a Final Four season, but also impacted the lives of the 22-member travel party.
Women’s Basketball Video Coordinator Erik Williams – along with cooperation from current Bears Mikayla Lyles and Justine Hartman – captured the life-changing experience in a manner that has become synonymous with the California Women’s Basketball brand: by using powerful images that not only tell the story of what the Golden Bears encountered in China, but in doing it in a high-performing style that is cutting edge and inviting. Titled “Out of Bounds,” the video chronicles the sights and sounds of Cal’s three-city tour.
In Beijing, the Bears visited the Great Wall of China at Mutianyu before taking in the sights at Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. The three-day opening city ended with a trip to the memorable Silk Market where bargaining is the name of the game.
The second city on the tour, Shanghai, began with a visit to the Yu Garden before shooting up 1,614 feet to the top of the Shanghai World Financial Center, which has the distinction of the being the second-tallest building in the world. Shanghai was capped with a tour of the water village at Zhou Zhuang.
Cal ended its 10-day trip in Hong Kong where a nighttime ferry ride to the Kowloon Waterfront was followed by a trip up to Victoria Peak in addition to a Cal Alumni of Hong Kong reception.
The video created by Williams detailing the trip is meant to highlight the cultural experiences that the Bears encountered off of the basketball court. The 10 days in China were a life changing experience that each and every member of the travel party will savor, and the California women’s basketball program is taking this opportunity to share a piece of that experience through this production.
