DAVIS, Calif. – Senior outside hitter Adrienne Gehan had 19 kills and 16 digs but Cal’s volleyball team was surprised at UC Davis on Thursday night, 12-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20.
Junior opposite hitter Christina Higgins added 15 kills and sophomore middle blocker Lillian Schonewise had 11 kills and five blocks for the Bears, who have dropped two straight after beginning the season 7-0.
“We definitely played well below expectations,” Cal coach Rich Feller said. “It was a real team effort. I guess that’s positive. It wasn’t just one person. It was all of us underperforming.”
After the Bears won the first set easily, the Aggies (7-5) evened the match and then took a 17-11 lead in the third set. But Cal came back to tie it at 21-21. With the score knotted at 24-24, UC Davis got a kill and a service ace from middle blocker Katie Quinn to close it out.
The Bears took a 12-9 lead in the fourth set but the Aggies erased the deficit for a 14-13 advantage. After it was 15-15, UC Davis scored six of the next eight points to take control and wrap up the match.
“We played against a team that really wanted it and Davis played out of this world,” Feller said. “We have to get back to work and figure out some things. This exposed a few holes in our team. In some situations, there was uncharacteristic low-level play by people that haven’t shown that all year. Maybe it’s an anomaly. Hopefully it’s not a trend.”
The Bears will next be in action Wednesday night when they open Pac-12 play against No. 8 Stanford in The Big Spike at Haas Pavilion. The match will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
