Hey Cal fans! This past week Cal Volleyball hosted the annual Hilton Garden Inn Invitational. We played Cal Poly, Santa Clara and Kansas State, which all proved to be good learning experiences for the team. Unfortunately, on Saturday afternoon we lost to Kansas State in five sets. Although it was our first loss of the season, I left the gym with an optimistic outlook due to the unshaken positive team dynamic that has defined this year’s team thus far.
All three teams in the tournament provided new challenges that we had yet to face this season. Though losing is never fun, I strongly believe that the lessons we can take from our first loss will help us grow into a stronger team for the future. Several components of our game were challenged throughout the five-set match against the Wildcats, which unfortunately cost us the game. These things are the focus of this week’s practice and will hopefully be improved by this week’s match at UC Davis. All in all, I was proud of the way the team remained positive and united during the entire game, despite our physical errors.
This week, we have been focusing on improving the deficiencies on our side of the net. It has been very helpful that we only have one game to prepare for this week, giving us time to focus on improving our skills and getting some rest before conference play begins. We are all really looking forward to playing UC Davis this week, and hopefully ending our preseason with another win!
