BERKELEY - With no matches this weekend, the No. 14/17 California women’s soccer team will host former Golden Bear players for its annual Alumni Weekend. Current and former players and coaches will enjoy a packed weekend, including the Cal vs. Ohio State football game on Saturday and a 7 vs. 7 exhibition match pitting current players against former players at California Memorial Stadium Sunday.
Though the Golden Bears have an 11-day break, the team is wasting no time preparing for longstanding rival Santa Clara. The Bears return to action against the Broncos Thursday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in Santa Clara. The Broncos received votes in this week’s NSCAA coaches poll and appeared just one spot below Cal at No. 18 in the Soccer America poll.
Cal is coming off two wins at the University of San Francisco Tournament last weekend, where the Bears beat Harvard 2-1 on Friday and shut out UC Davis 4-0 on Sunday. The team is now 5-0-1 and is off to its best six-game start since 2005. In stats through Sunday’s games, the Blue and Gold lead the Pac-12 in points (43), goals (15) and assists (13).
With a 5-0-1 record after two weeks of play, the Golden Bears are ranked in the current polls (for play through Sept. 8, 2013): NSCAA - 14, Soccer America - 17, TopDrawerSoccer - 20, Soccer Times - 16, BennettRank - 22, College Sports Madness - 14.
This season, seven of Cal’s 20 games will be broadcast live on television. Six games will air on the Pac-12 Network: St. Mary’s (9/22), Arizona State (10/4), USC (10/11), UCLA (10/13), Oregon (10/28) and Stanford (11/6). The Nov. 3 game vs. Washington will be televised on ESPNU.
