SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Led by four goals by freshman Chandler Jarrels-Stickney, No. 4 ranked Cal finished 4-0 at the Triton Invitational with a 15-4 victory over No. 17 UC Davis Sunday (Sept. 8) in the Golden Bears’ final match of the tournament in San Diego. Earlier Sunday, Kirk Everist’s squad had defeated No. 13 Loyola Marymount, 17-7, and on Saturday had dominated Redlands, 21-3, and powered past host UC San Diego, 13-10. Cal finished the two-day invite outscoring its opponents, 66-24.
Other top scorers for the Bears against UC Davis were junior Aleksa Saponjic and sophomore Mitchell Hamilton with two goals apiece. Senior goalie Michael Boggan and junior goalie Jon Sibley each tallied five saves, while redshirt freshman Farrel South recorded a team-high five steals.
In the Sunday morning match versus LMU, Cal had 12 different players score, including two goals apiece from Hunter Gettelfinger, Colin Mulcahy, Saponjic, Luka Ivanovic, and Thomas Carrol. Boggan had nine saves.
In Saturday’s victory over UC San Diego, Gettelfinger paced Cal with four goals, while Sibley had an impressive 14 saves. In the season-opener versus Redlands, senior captain Collin Smith’s four goals led the Bears with 12 different players scoring in that match.
Following the Triton Invitational, the Bears will return to Spieker Aquatics Complex where they will host an Alumni match at 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14. The Alumni match will be honoring the 40th anniversary of Cal’s 1973 National Championship squad, the first of the Bears’ NCAA-record 13 national crowns. On Sept. 21-22, Cal will be hosting the 16-team NorCal Invitational, featuring the nation’s top collegiate water polo teams.
