SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – The No. 4 ranked Cal men’s water polo team went 2-0 during the first day of the Triton Invitational, defeating host UC San Diego, 13-10, in a late afternoon match, after dominating Redlands, 21-3, earlier in the day. Senior attacker Hunter Gettelfinger paced the Golden Bears with four goals against the Tritons, while junior goalie Jon Sibley had an impressive 14 saves.
Other top scorers for Cal against UC San Diego were senior Collin Smith and sophomores Thomas Agramonte and Mitchell Hamilton had two goals apiece.
Earlier Smith’s four goals led the Bears in their big win over Redlands. Cal had 12 different players score in that match, including true freshmen Thomas Carroll and Chandler Jarrels-Stickney with three and two goals, respectively. Sibley finished with 10 saves, while senior goalie Michael Boggan had five saves.
Kirk Everist’s squad will next play Loyola Marymount at 9:30 a.m. and UC Davis at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 8 on UC San Diego’s East Pool.
“It was a good first day for us,” said Everist. “We had some good moments and got to see our young players in action. It’s early in the season and we are improving every day
