BERKELEY – With the 2013-14 season on the horizon, the California men’s tennis team earned ITA preseason rankings as well as invitations to the upcoming ITA Men’s All-American Championships, held at the University of Tulsa. Senior Ben McLachlan, senior Campbell Johnson and sophomore Mads Engsted claimed preseason rankings, while McLachlan, Johnson, Engsted and junior Gregory Bayane earned invites to the All-American Championships.
The tournament is the ITA’s first national tournament of the season and kicks off with pre-qualifying matches starting on Sept. 28; the main draw is set to run from Oct. 3-6
McLachlan – ranked 27th in the preseason singles poll - and Johnson – ranked 41st – will play in main draw singles in Oklahoma, while Bayane is on the alternate list for qualifying singles. The pair of McLachlan and Engsted – ranked 41st in the preseason doubles poll – garnered a spot in qualifying doubles at the All-American Championships. That duo earned a final ranking of 82nd in 2012-13after posting an 11-5 record.
The four Bears were key components on the team that reached the NCAA round of 16 and ended with a No. 17 ranking last season. McLachlan, Cal’s No. 1 singles player who compiled a 19-18 overall record, wound up with a No. 44 final ranking after ending his season in the 2013 NCAA singles round of 64. Johnson, who had a 28-13 singles record and a No. 64 final ranking, also ended his singles season in the round of 64.
Bayane, mainly playing No. 4 singles for the Bears, collected a 28-12 singles mark in 2012-13.
The Bears open their season in the Harvard Chowder Fest scheduled for Sept. 13-15 in Boston, Mass.
