BERKELEY – The ITA and the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships took notice of California’s talented women’s tennis program when the game’s governing body named four Golden Bears as preseason All-Americans and the fall tournament invited the same four Bears to the event slated for Sept. 28-Oct. 6 in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Cal has a total of four singles players ranked in the ITA top 50 and one duo ranked in the top 10 for doubles.

Head coach Amanda Augustus’ squad is coming off of a strong 2012-13 season, with the Cal team advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals and claiming a final ranking of ninth. Most of the players who contributed to that deep postseason run have returned this season.

In the 2013-14 ITA preseason singles poll, Cal junior Zsofi Susanyi earned the No. 4 ranking and senior teammate Anett Schutting ranked right behind her at No. 5. The Bears – both of whom earned singles All-America honors last season – finished the 2012-13 season with ITA rankings, respectively, of ninth and 10th, after Susanyi, the No. 5 seed, advanced to the NCAA singles round of 16 and Schutting claimed the No. 8 seed in the postseason. Susanyi wound up with a 28-5 record, and Schutting had a 34-14 mark.

Also in the preseason singles rankings, sophomore Klara Fabikova stands at No. 23 – she earned a final 2012-13 ranking of No. 30 and a record of 35-9 – while sophomore Lynn Chi is ranked 44th. Chi, who compiled a 36-7 record as a freshman, claimed a final ranking of 57th last season.

The pair of Chi and Schutting claimed a No. 11 preseason doubles ranking, after posting an 18-8 record and final ranking of 29th last year. Susanyi/Fabikova – the 42nd-ranked team with a 14-5 record last year – earned a No. 25 preseason mark.

The Riviera/ITA All-American Championships invited Susanyi and Schutting to play in main draw singles for the second consecutive season, while Fabikova and Chi will play in qualifying singles at the event held at the Riviera Tennis Club. Fabikova is also an alternate for the main draw. The duo of Chi and Schutting will play in main draw doubles, with Susanyi/Fabikova will play in qualifying doubles.

The Bears open the year when they host the Cal Nike Invitational from Sept. 27-29 at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
