BERKELEY – California sophomore Ifeoma Onumonu net two goals to lead the No. 18 Golden Bears (3-0-1) to a 3-0 shutout of the San Jose State Spartans (0-4-0) Sunday afternoon on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium.
The forward from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. scored in the 56th minute to put the Blue and Gold on the board, then upped the team’s total to three in the 82nd minute. Sophomore Samantha Witteman (Redondo Beach, Calif.) assisted in both of Onumonu’s goals, and Onumonu returned the favor with an assist on Witteman’s goal in the 61st minute. Senior Kory Lamet (Martinez, Calif.) also earned credit for an assist on the third goal.
Witteman has been on a bit of a hot streak this weekend, scoring her first collegiate goal on Friday while also notching an assist to add to Sunday’s goal and two assists.
“It’s been a really good weekend both Friday night and today. We’ve been playing pretty well and there are still a couple of things we need to work on, so personally I’ve just been bringing everything I have to the table,” Witteman said.
Unlike in the team’s first match of the weekend, Cal was more adept at finishing shots vs. San Jose State with five shots on goal of the 11 total. In Friday’s match vs. Detroit, the Golden Bears had five good shots of 19 and just two found net.
Both teams battled with immense physicality for a total of 16 fouls on the day, and the Bears and Spartans headed to the locker room at halftime without any major production in the box. The teams evenly paced each other through the first period’s back-and-forth, with San Jose State leading Cal in shots 4-3 and both Spartan goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski and Bear goalie Emily Kruger (Woodside, Calif.) registering a save each.
The Bears returned from halftime with renewed aggressiveness before finally scoring. Witteman found the ball in air and chipped it over a Spartan defender to Onumonu, who dribbled it a few feet before popping it into the left side of the net.
Onumonu later returned the favor with a short cut-back cross to Witteman down the line. Witteman ran into the ball and hit it off her foot to the top of the post as the ball bounced back in for goal No. 2.
Cal’s third goal featured a double-assist by Lamet and Witteman back to an open Onumonu, who easily found net.
Cal will again hit the road this weekend, though the Golden Bears will not have to travel far. The Bears play Harvard Friday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. and UC Davis Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:30 p.m. in a tournament at the University of San Francisco.
