Cal junior Tiera Schroeder and the United States captured the Gold Medal at the World Junior Championships with a 9-7 victory over Spain in the title match in Volos, Greece on Sunday.

The Americans led 6-2 at halftime but Spain mounted a comeback behind Cal freshman Roser Tarrago, who scored four of her country’s five goals in the second half. Her goal with 5:32 remaining in the match cut the United States’ advantage to 7-6. But the American scored two goals to open up a bigger lead before Tarrago scored one last time with one second to go.

Tarrago, who was on Spain’s Olympic Team that won the Silver Medal in 2012 and the team that captured the Gold Medal at the World Championships earlier this summer, was the tournament’s leading scorer with 22 goals.

Meanwhile, Hungary fell in the Fifth Place Game to Italy, 10-6. Fellow Cal incoming freshman Dora Antal and Anna Illes play for the Hungarians.

Next up for Schroeder, Tarrago, Antal and Illes: A long flight to the Bay Area for the start of school.
