U.S., Spain match up for title on Sunday

A member of the Cal women’s water polo team is going to win the World Junior Championships.

The United States and Spain advanced to the title match Saturday with wins in the semifinals in Volos, Greece. The Americans, who feature Cal junior Tiera Schroeder, defeated Greece 10-3. Spain, meanwhile, held on to defeat Russia 9-8.

Cal freshman Roser Tarrago led the Spaniards with four goals. Spain held a 9-4 lead midway through the third quarter and was able to turn back Russia’s comeback bid.

In a consolation round game, Hungary defeated Great Britain 13-5. Cal freshman Dora Antal exploded for six goals while fellow Bears freshman Anna Illes added one.

The United States and Spain will meet at 9 a.m. PT Sunday for the championship. Hungary plays Italy for fifth place at 2 a.m. PT.
