It was another big day for Cal women’s water polo players at the World Junior Championships in Volos, Greece on Friday.
Three Bears were on display in one quarterfinal match Friday when the United States defeated Hungary 12-10 to move into the semifinals. Junior Tiera Schroeder is part of the American team that opened up a 12-7 lead and held on for the victory. The United States now plays Greece in Saturday’s semifinals.
Meanwhile, the two Cal players competing for Hungary combined to score six of its 10 goals, with freshman Anna Illes tallying four scores and fellow freshman Dora Antal coming up with two. Hungary will next meet Great Britain in a consolation round match Saturday.
It also was a big day freshman Roser Tarrago. Tarrago broke a 7-7 tie with a goal with 26 seconds remaining to lift Spain to an 8-7 victory over Australia in another quarterfinal matchup. That was one of three goals for Tarrago, a team-high.
Spain plays Russia in Saturday’s semifinals.
