BERKELEY – California women’s soccer sophomore forward Ifeoma Onumonu is a candidate on the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced Wednesday. The award is considered the highest individual honor in college soccer, and its recipients are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

“The Hermann Watch List has a fantastic array of talent on it. For Ifeoma to be named to this list shows her quality of play. It is a tremendous honor for her and well deserved,” said California head coach Neil McGuire. “Ife is an outstanding student-athlete and even better person. We are proud to have her as a member of our program at Cal.”

Onumonu is just one of three sophomores on the list of 31 NCAA Division I women’s soccer players, and the first Golden Bear women’s soccer player since Alex Morgan in 2010 to be named to the list.

“It’s an honor to be named to the MAC Hermann Watch List, because it means that I’m moving in the right direction in terms of my game. I’m just happy to be noticed and acknowledged whether I earn the trophy or not,” Onumonu said.

A product of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Onumonu was the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and a Soccer America All-Freshman First Team selection in her debut season for the Golden Bears. She led all Pac-12 freshmen in points (27), goals (11) and assists (5) and ranked second in the Conference in goals and points and tied for sixth in assists per game (0.26). Onumonu - who also led the Bears in goals and points – was also tied for the team's top assist mark and paced the Bears in game-winning goals (4). Earlier this month, Onumonu was invited to train with the U.S. Women’s National Team U20 squad for two international matches vs. Japan.

Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches that are NSCAA members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, as they will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist starting in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website.

From that pool of 30, six finalists (three men, three women) will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
