BROOKLINE, Mass. – Brandon Hagy was defeated by Scottie Scheffler in 20 holes in a second-round match Thursday at the U.S. Amateur. Hagy was the final of five Cal players remaining in the original 312-player field that played two rounds of stroke play Monday and Tuesday. Hagy and Michael Weaver were the two Cal players among the 64 to qualify match play but Weaver was defeated in first-round action Wednesday.

Hagy led Scheffler by two holes with five remaining on Thursday at The Country Club but a double bogey by Hagy on the par-four 14th and a birdie by Scheffler on the par-four 17th forced extra holes. Both players went back to the par-four first hole at The Country Club and made par on the 19th hole of the match before Hagy bogeyed the par-three second hole to give Scheffler the victory.

Scheffler birdied the opening hole to take the first lead of a back-and-fourth match that featured five lead changes, tied eight times and within one hole after 19 of 20 holes. Hagy grabbed his first lead three holes later when he won back-to-back holes on a double bogey and bogey by Scheffler on the third and fourth holes. But Scheffler responded immediately with a birdie on the par-four fifth to square the match and retook the lead when Hagy made a double bogey on the par-three seventh. The match went back to all square when Scheffler bogeyed the par-four ninth.

Hagy retook the lead when Scheffler bogeyed the par-four 11th and extended it to two holes on another Scheffler bogey on the par-four 13th before Scheffler started his comeback.

Hagy (72-71 – 143, +3) and Weaver (74-69 – 143, +3) both made match play at the U.S. Amateur for the second consecutive season by tying for 38th place after the conclusion of 36 holes of stroke play. Pace Johnson (T108th, 75-72 – 147, +7), Max Homa (T146th, 78-71 – 149, +9) and Michael Kim (T238th, 81-73 – 154, +14) all participated in 36 holes of stroke play but did not qualify for match play. Cal’s five players at the 113th U.S. Amateur were one shy of the school-record six that competed in 2010 and equaled the five Golden Bears in the 2012 event.
