MOSCOW - Former Golden Bear standout Alysia Montano began her quest for a medal at the World Championships Thursday by leading from the gun to win her opening-round heat of the 800 meters to advance to Friday’s semifinals.

A five-time USA champion and winner of the 2007 NCAA title while at Cal, Montano crossed the line in heat two in 1:59.47. She will be joined in the semis by two others Americans – Brenda Martinez and Ajeé Wilson.

"I've got to recover and get to the next round,” said Montano, who finished fifth in the 800 at last summer’s Olympics. “This is not the part. The part is three days from now in the final. I feel good."

Another former Bear did not fare as well. High jumper Inika McPherson cleared 6-0 on her third attempt and was over the bar at 6-2 on her second try, but she failed three times at 6-3.5 to miss out on the final.

“I needed to be more consistent in my approach to the bar,” McPherson said. “It just didn’t go well.”
