In "The Bear Necessities" California senior guard Jeff Powers is giving fans an inside look at the Golden Bears during the 2013-14 season. In his first installments, Powers will share how each of the Bears spent their summer.
The Summer of the Bear is slowly coming to a close. After a long and exciting season, the Bears have been hard at work this summer. But the summer is nearing an end for many Bears. In this series, fans will get an inside look at what many Bears have been doing this summer. From intense on court sessions to late nights in they gym, your Golden Bears have been hard at work. Summer is where players become good players and good players become great ones.
As the first post in this series, I will be highlighting my summer from start to finish. My summer has taken a much different path than others but busy nonetheless. As always, I enjoy some time off after a long season. I began my summer with a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. A much needed time to rest, Cabo allowed me time to relax and recharge my batteries.
After this short trip, I came back to begin an internship at KGO Radio. I would serve as a newsroom assistant. If someone needed something done, I was their guy. I enjoyed my time at KGO as it provided me valuable experience and insight into what goes on behind the scenes. From researching stories to going out on newscalls, KGO was a wealth of information. KGO also provided me the opportunity to get involved with their upcoming show "Inside the Locker Room" with the Cal Bears. Stay tuned as this segment will be fun to listen beginning this fall.
This summer did not provide me with a break from school work however. I recently finished a statistics class at Foothill College, a very difficult class that challenged me the whole way.
As this summer progressed, I developed many side projects that I am excited about. Coming in the Spring Semester 2014, David Kravish and myself will be teaching a class at Cal, titled "Basketball Analysis 101." The class will explore many strategies and concepts of the game while allowing students to interact with players and coaches. David and I are very excited about this opportunity so stay tuned! Also in the works is a potential shooting camp with yours truly. No details as of yet, but the concept is ready to take flight!
Let's not forget about basketball! With my busy schedule, I always managed to come back to the gym everyday. Whether it be long nights on the shooting gun or fierce dribbling workouts in the racket ball courts, no days were taken off. Nothing is better than coming in to work out and seeing your teammates in there as well. Your Bears are ready for the up and coming season! I also enjoyed the San Francisco Pro-Am as well, playing for the Oakland Believers for three games and having a blast.
Check back here often to see what the rest of the Bears were up to this summer.
As always, Go Bears!
