Cal Football Notebook (August 9)
*The countdown to the Cal’s season opener at home against Northwestern on Saturday, Aug. 31 is now at 22 days. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN with a kickoff time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. PT.
*Cal has held four practices during its 2013 training camp, including its first in pads (uppers only) on Thursday. The team is scheduled to work out in uppers again for its next scheduled workout Friday.
*Highlights from Cal’s last workout Thursday included …
11-on-11 sessions – A 40-yard completion from Zach Kline to Chris Harper, back-to-back sacks by Gabe King and Antione Davis, and back-to-back short touchdown runs by Darren Ervin and Kyle Boehm
7-on-7 sessions – An amazing one-handed catch by Boehm
*The Drive put a microphone on former Cal player Brian Treggs at Thursday’s practice. Treggs is the father of sophomore wide receiver Bryce Treggs. The Drive is the Pac-12 Networks’ season-long television show featuring an all-access look at the Cal and Arizona State football programs. The show will debut on the Pac-12 Networks on Sept. 11 (7 p.m. PT) with a one-hour special and run for the next 13 weeks with new 30-minute episodes debuting each Wednesday at 7 p.m. and approximately 9:30 p.m. at the conclusion of Wednesday night’s Pac-12 women’s volleyball match.
*Others spotted in attendance at Thursday’s workout included former Cal defensive lineman Trevor Guyton and current play-by-play announcer Joe Starkey.
*After three practices without a fumble the defense forced Brendan Bigelow into making one Thursday but it was the only turnover during team sessions.
*The American Football Coaches Association announced recently that Nick Forbes is a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
*Fans can check out post-practice interviews with head coach Sonny Dykes and selected players after each of the team’s workouts during training camp on the Cal Athletics You Tube channel (link to youtube.com/calathletics). *Cal is offering its season-ticket holders in all sports a special deal for the game against Portland State on Sept. 7. All season-ticket holders can buy single-game tickets for the contest for $5. Fans can get details of the deal at CalBears.com.
*The Pac-12 Networks has started a campaign to urge customers to switch from DirecTV because the network does not carry Pac-12 Networks. Check out this YouTube video.
