BERKELEY – California field hockey head coach Shellie Onstead’s team announced two additions to her coaching staff Wednesday as the Golden Bears prepare to open camp next week for the 2013 season.

Onstead has added former U.S. Men’s National Team member Malachi Mahan as an assistant coach and welcomes former U.S. Women’s National Team member Jill Dedman back to Berkeley as a volunteer assistant coach specializing with the goalkeepers.

Mahan joins the Bears following a seven-year stint as a defender in the U.S. Men’s National Team organization from 2001-08. He joins the Bears after recently completing a degree in liberal studies at Arizona State. Mahan was a member of the 2005 U.S. Pan American Junior Championship team that finished fourth overall in the tournament held in Havana, Cuba. The Camarilla, Calif., native has also spent time working with U-16 teams prior to joining the Golden Bears.

Dedman, who will work specifically with the goalkeepers, previously spent the 2011 season with the Golden Bears where she helped coach Cal to the NorPac Tournament championship. She coached Maddie Hand to 15 wins, a 1.64 goals against average and 90 saves in 20 games. In addition to her year at Cal, she has spent time as an assistant at Albany and Indiana. In the first of her two seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana, Dedman guided IU's Alex Mann to 14 wins, a 1.89 goals against average and 80 saves in 21 games.

A graduate of Boston College (’00) where she was a two-time Big East Goalkeeper of the Year Award winner, a three-time regional All-American and four-time academic All-American, Dedman earned First Team All-Big East honors in 1998 and 2000, and was a four-time Academic All-Big East honoree. She was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame on Oct. 23, 2010.

She also competed with the U.S. National team for five years, participating in a number of international tournaments, as well as the U.S. Indoor Field Hockey team between 2005-07 and garnered a silver medal at the 2006 Indoor Pan American Cup.
