Onumonu Selected to U.S. U-20 WNT Training Camp
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and rising California sophomore Ifeoma Onumonu will join the U.S. Under-20 Women’s National Team for training camp beginning Aug. 4 at U.S. Soccer’s National Training Center, the Stubhub Center, in Carson, Calif.
The camp will feature two full international matches against the Japan U-20 WNT, first on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 4 p.m. and again on Sunday, Aug. 11 at 12 p.m. Both matches will take place on David Vanole Field (Field No. 3). Admission and parking are free to the public.
“Any time one of our players has the chance to represent her country it benefits our program and university. Ife will be a great ambassador for her team,” said Golden Bear head coach Neil McGuire.
With 11 goals in her freshman campaign, Onumonu led the Bears and tied for second in the conference. She was also the leading freshman in the Pac-12 for points (28) and assists (6), and was named to Soccer America’s All-Freshman First Team. She follows in the footsteps of Cal players such as Alex Morgan and Megan Jesolva, who trained with the U-20, then U-23 national teams while they were in college before eventually going pro.
“We are very pleased for Ife as she proved last season she is a player of high quality,” McGuire said. “Playing at the National Team level will enhance her game in many ways. She will play faster, make better decisions and be forced to become a multi-dimensional attacker, which will benefit us here at Cal.”
Onumonu joins 23 other players called up by U.S. head coach Michelle French as the USA prepares for the eight-team CONCACAF Qualifying Tournament that will send the top three finishers to 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cup Women’s World Cup in Canada. The qualifying competition will be held from January 9-19, 2014, in the Cayman Islands.
Players born on or after Jan. 1, 1994, are age-eligible for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
