Former Cal sprint star Nathan Adrian turned in the top performance in the semifinals of the 100-meter free Wednesday (July 31) at the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona, placing first with a time of 47.95. Another Golden Bear standout, Damir Dugonjic, took fourth place in the 50-meter breaststroke (27.05) Wednesday at Palau Sanit Jordi.
Adrian will next compete in the finals of 100 free on Thursday, Aug. 2. Dugonjic, from Slovenia, had place second in the semifinals of the 50 breast on Tuesday after clocking in a European record of 26.83.
Earlier at the World Championships, Dugonjic had placed fourth in the 100 breast with a time of 59.68, while Adrian and Anthony Ervin were member of Team USA’s 400 free relay that captured the silver medal on July 28.
Dugonjic swam for the Golden Bears from 2008 through 2011 – winning three NCAA titles and owning Cal’s school record in the 100-yard breast (50.86, set in 2009). He competed for Slovenia in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics and was a member of NCAA championship 200 and 400 medley relays with Adrian in 2010 and 2011.
Adrian, the gold medal winner in the 100 free at the 2012 London Olympics, propelled the Americans to the lead on Sunday after opening the 400 relay with a mark of 47.95 after the first 100 meters. Ryan Lochte was overtaken by Australia’s Cameron McEvoy, before Ervin, the 50 free gold medalist in 2000, recaptured the lead for Team USA, swimming the third leg in a time of 47.44.
Adrian, who helped the Bears to the 2011 NCAA team title along with Dugonjic, will be competing in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle in Barcelona after winning the 50 and 100 free earlier this summer at the Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis.
Ervin, who finished second to Adrian in the 50 free and was third in the 100 free in Indianapolis, will also be competing in the 50 free in Spain. The last World Championships Ervin competed in was exactly 10 years ago, in 2003, at Palau Sanit Jordi in Barcelona.
Adrian's 100 free heats and semifinals will be held Wednesday, July 31, with the final on Thursday, Aug. 1. The 50 free heats and semifinals for Adrian and Ervin are slated for Friday, Aug. 2, and the 50 free finals will be Saturday, Aug. 3.
