Roland, Ark. –Michael Weaver leads a group of seven Cal men’s golfers playing in the Western Amateur after the first round of action Tuesday at the par-72 Alotian Golf Club. Weaver shot an opening-round 68 and is tied for eighth three shots off the seven-under par round of 65 shot by the trio of first-round leaders in Seth Reeves, Sam Smith and Cameron Wilson.
Weaver’s round included an eagle on the par-five 14th hole and a trio of birdies on the par-four fifth, ninth and 13th holes. His lone bogey came on the par-four second hole.
The Western Amateur is a six-day event that features a combination of stroke and match play. All 156 players in the field are scheduled to play a total of 36 holes of stroke play over the event’s first two days. The field will be cut to the low 44 scores and ties after 36 holes. Following an additional two rounds of stroke play scheduled for Thursday and Friday the field is reduced to 16 players for match play.
Match play begins with Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches Saturday before the semifinals and finals are contested Sunday.
