BARCELONA – Three Cal incoming freshmen will participate in the semifinals of the FINA World Championships on Wednesday after Hungary and Spain advanced with victories in the quarterfinals Monday.
Dora Antal and Anna Illes helped the Hungarians defeat The Netherlands, 11-7. Antal closed out the scoring for Hungary with an empty-net goal in the fourth period.
Antal was a member of Hungary’s 2012 Olympic Team that played in the Bronze Medal game against Australia in London. At 19, she was the youngest player to compete in women’s water polo at the Olympics. She was the most valuable player at the 2011 European Junior Championships and led Hungary in scoring as her country placed second at the 2011 World Junior Championships.
Illes was captain of the Hungarian Junior National Team that won a Silver Medal at the European Youth Championships in 2012. She also was the captain and high scorer for Hungary at the World Youth Championships last December. Illes also helped Hungary advance to the FINA World League finals earlier this summer in China.
Roser Tarrago helped the host country advance to the semifinals as Spain beat the United States, 9-6. Tarrago closed out the scoring with a goal from the left corner in the fourth quarter.
Tarrago was on Spain’s Olympic team that captured the Silver Medal last summer. She had five goals, four assists and five steals during the Olympics.
All three soon-to-be Bears will be in the same pool Wednesday when Spain meets Hungary in the semifinals.
