Former Golden Bear swimming standouts and Olympic gold medalists Nathan Adrian and Anthony Ervin, along with Cal women’s swimming’s Olympic star Natalie Coughlin, were featured recently by Comcast SportsNet in preparation for the 2013 FINA World Swimming Championships, held July 28-Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain Comcast Cal Swimming Feature.
Between Adrian, Ervin and Coughlin, these three Bears – currently training at Spieker Aquatics Complex under the guidance of Cal men’s swimming and diving coach David Durden – have captured 17 Olympic medals from the 2000 through the 2012 Olympic Games.
Adrian, who won the 2012 Olympic gold medal in the 100 free at the London Games and helped the Bears to the 2011 NCAA team title, will be competing in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle in Barcelona after winning the 50 and 100 free earlier this summer at the Phillips 66 National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis.
Ervin, who won the 50 free gold at the 2000 Olympics and finished second to Adrian in the 50 free and was third in the 100 free in Indianapolis, will be competing in the 50 free and Team USA’s 400 free relay in Barcelona. The last World Championships Ervin competed in was exactly 10 years ago, in 2003, at Palau Sanit Jordi in Barcelona.Ervins prelims and finals of the 400 free relay will be Sunday, July 28. Adrian's 100 free prelim and finals with be held Wednesday, July 31. The 50 free prelims and finals are slated for Friday, Aug. 2. Besides Couglin, five other Cal women (Rachel Bootsma, Missy Franklin, Caitlin Leverenz, Elizabeth Pelton, Dana Vollmer) plus coach Teri McKeever, will be representing the Bears for Team USA at Barcelona.
