DALLAS, Texas – Junior running back Brendan Bigelow has been included on a list of preseason candidates for the 2013 Doak Walker Award announced by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. The award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
“My pain and desire is fuel to myself and success is not given, it’s won,” Bigelow said. “Therefore it is an honor and privilege to be part of the Doak Walker Award.”
Bigelow has 1,844 career all-purpose yards over 23 games played and three starts in his first two seasons at Cal in 2011 and 2012 as he has returned 58 kicks for 1,285 yards and a touchdown, while adding 456 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, and eight receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. His all-purpose and rushing totals are all the most by an active Cal player. Bigelow had a career-high 160 yards rushing and two touchdowns on only four carries at Ohio State in 2012 as he became only the second Football Bowl Subdivision player in the last decade to post 150 or more yards rushing in a game on five or fewer carries. He was also the first Cal player since Jahvid Best in 2009 with three or more runs of 50-plus yards during a season on a pair of scoring jaunts at Ohio State of 81 and 59 yards, as well as a 57-yard TD rush at Utah. The 81-yard rush was the longest ever by an opponent at Ohio Stadium.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name the semifinalists on November 14, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on November 25. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on December 2 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2013 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 12, on ESPN. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held in Dallas, Texas, in February 2013.
The award, in its 24th year, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
