SURREY, B.C., Canada – Boosted by solid overall performances from California's Lindsey Ziegenhirt and Valerie Arioto, Team USA produced an impressive 10-3 run-rule showing against Japan at the Canadian Open. The Red, White and Blue move to 2-0 at the Canadian Open and 5-2 for the summer after coming up short in two previous matchups against Japan.

The duo helped the Eagles surge to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Playing first base and batting fourth in the lineup, Arioto drew a walk to load the bases. A single and a fielder’s choice brought Team USA’s second and third runs across and placed Arioto at third before catcher Ziegenhirt hit a sacrifice fly for run No. 4.

Arioto followed with two more walks, including at the bottom of the second and a pivotal walk at the bottom of the sixth that juiced the bases again and set the diamond up for Amber Freeman’s (Arizona State) grand slam to mercy rule the Japanese.

Arioto went 0-for-1, collecting three walks and two runs, and Ziegenhirt was credited with an RBI and sacrifice fly in her 0-for-2 performance. The duo also played strong defense, finishing with a combined 10 putouts.

The Eagles return for two games Thursday, starting at 3:30 p.m. PT against Australia and again at 8:30 p.m. against Venezuela. Both games feature free live stats and a live video stream for a fee through CanadianOpenFastpitch.com
