LORTON, Va. – Junior Michael Kim posted an 8 & 6 victory over Brandon Hortt in a Round of 64 match Wednesday at the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. The win moves Kim on to a Round of 32 match against Lucas Kim on Thursday at 8:40 a.m. ET/5:40 a.m. PT. The winner will play again Thursday in a Round of 16 match at 1:20 p.m. ET/10:20 a.m. PT against the winner of a Round of 32 match between Mitchell Rutledge and Nick Sherwood.
Kim won eight holes without dropping one Thursday during a match against Hortt that ended after 12 holes. After the players halved the par-four first hole with bogeys, Kim would win six consecutive holes to take control of the match. Hortt bogeyed the par-four second to give Kim his first lead before Kim posted back-to-back birdies on the par-four third and par-three fourth to go ahead by three holes. After a Hortt bogey on the par-four fifth, Kim put up another back-to-back birdies again on the par-four sixth and seventh holes to go ahead by six. Kim would pick up another hole with a birdie on the par-four 10th and Hortt ran out of holes when he bogeyed the par-four 12th.
Kim (69-68 – 137, -3) qualified for match play by finishing the stroke play portion of the tournament played Monday and Tuesday tied for fifth, with the low 64 scores from the 156 golfers in the initial field moving on to match play.
Six rounds of match play will determine the champion of the event with Wednesday’s Round of 64 being followed by Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches Thursday, quarterfinals and semifinals Friday, and a 36-hole championship match Saturday.
Kim, who reached the Round of 16 at the event in 2012, qualified for the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship by being ranked among the top 75 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of the closing dates for entries on May 22 and was one of 11 players fully exempt from qualifying.
