TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore wide receiver Chris Harper was named Tuesday to the preseason watch list for the 2013 Biletnikoff Award announced by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc. The honor annually recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football and is named for Fred Biletnikoff, a member of the pro and college football halls of fame who was an All-Pro receiver with the Oakland Raiders after an All-American collegiate career at Florida State.
“I’m truly honored and blessed to be named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list,” Harper said. “It’s something that I’ve worked extremely hard for and hopefully I can win the award this upcoming season.”
Harper was previously named a preseason third-team All-Pac-12 choice by Phil Steele after a huge true freshman season in 2012 when he recorded 41 catches for 544 yards and two touchdowns to rank second on the team in all three categories. Harper was just shy of the true freshman school records posted by Keenan Allen (46 catches in 2010) and DeSean Jackson (601 receiving yards in 2005) a year ago when he had per-game averages of 45.33 receiving yards and 3.42 receptions that both ranked 19th in the Pac-12. He played in all 12 games with starts in each of the last five contests and led Cal in receiving on five occasions, including four of the last five games.
Harper’s notable moments in 2012 included the Big Game against Stanford when he co-led the Golden Bears with four catches for a team-high 82 yards to earn the Berkeley Breakfast Club Award for Cal’s Outstanding Player in the contest on the offensive side of the ball. He also teamed with wide receiver Bryce Treggs to become the first set of true freshmen to score in their collegiate debut at Cal since running backs Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett in 2004. Against Washington he tied a career high with seven catches for a career-high 101 yards, made a one-handed catch that was the No. 2 Play of the Day on ESPN’s SportsCenter and scored on a 14-yard reverse on his first collegiate carry.
The 2013 Biletnikoff Award winner will be presented live on December 12, 2013, on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be telecast on ESPN from 7-9 p.m. ET/4-6 p.m. PT. The winner will receive his trophy at the Biletnikoff Award Banquet at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on February 8, 2014. Coaching great Dick Vermeil will deliver the 2014 banquet’s keynote address. The banquet will be streamed live on ESPN3.
The award recipient is selected by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of over 200 prominent college football journalists, commentators and former receivers. Receivers may be added to the watch list as their season performances dictate.
The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc. will announce the ten Biletnikoff Award semifinalists on November 18, 2013, following a vote by the Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee. Likewise, the three finalists will be declared, following another vote, on November 25, 2013. For more details on the Biletnikoff Award visit biletnikoffaward.com.
