LORTON, VA – Junior Michael Kim opened play Monday at the 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship with a round of one-under par 69 at the par-70, 7,022-yard Laurel Hill Golf Club. Kim is tied for 13th place and four shots behind first-round leader Garret Rank after his five-under par 65 on Monday.

Kim birdied three holes Monday while picking up a pair of bogeys. His birdies came on the par-four seventh and 13th holes as well as the par-five 18th, while his bogeys were on the par-four second and 12th holes.

“I started with a decent round today,” Kim said. “I’m in good position to make match play if I play one more good round. I just need to stay focused and I should be fine. I’m looking forward to it.”

Kim will tee off in second-round stroke-play action Tuesday from the 10th tee at 1:10 p.m. ET/10:10 a.m. PT.

The low 64 scores from the 156 golfers in the championship field at the end of 36 holes of stroke play scheduled to conclude Tuesday will advance to match play slated to start Wednesday. Six rounds of match play will determine the champion of the event that is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole championship match Saturday.

Kim qualified for the 2013 event by being ranked among the top 75 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking as of the closing dates of the entries on May 22 and was one of 11 players fully exempt from qualifying.

Kim reached the Round of 16 at the event in 2012.
